Getting There

  • Driving

    From I-5, take CA-56 East. Exit at Black Mountain Road and head north for about a mile. The preserve entrance will be on your right. Parking is available at the staging area on Black Mountain Road. Parking cost is free.

  • Public Transport

    From downtown San Diego, take the MTS bus route 20 towards Mira Mesa Transit Center. Get off at the Black Mountain Rd & Paseo Montanoso stop. Walk north on Black Mountain Rd for approximately 1 mile to the preserve entrance. A one-way fare on MTS is $2.50.

Los Penasquitos Canyon County Preserve offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance right in the heart of San Diego. It was also part of the first Mexican land grant in San Diego County, Rancho Santa Maria de Los Peñasquitos. The canyon's diverse terrain supports over 500 plant species and 175 types of birds, as well as a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Keep an eye out for mule deer, bobcats, and coyotes as you explore the preserve's 12 miles of trails. A highlight for many is the seasonal waterfall cascading through volcanic rock.
