Discover more about Fountain of life

The Fountain of Life, officially named the Mayor Gregory S. Pettis Fountain of Life, is a landmark in downtown Cathedral City, California. Designed by artist Jennifer Johnson and architect Reuel Young, the fountain serves as both an art piece and a functional space where visitors can interact with water features. The fountain's design incorporates elements that represent the history and environment of the Coachella Valley. Three central stone columns are adorned with sculptures of bighorn sheep, lizards, tortoises, and other native animals and plants. The spiral design, seen in the fountain's floor, basins, and even the sheep's horns, symbolizes continuous birth and rejuvenation. A Cahuilla basket embedded in the stone pays tribute to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. While the fountain has served as an interactive water feature in the past, it has faced closures due to repairs and safety concerns. As of 2023, there were discussions to transition the fountain into a visual art piece. Despite these changes, the Fountain of Life remains a significant landmark in Cathedral City's downtown, reflecting the city's commitment to public art and community spaces.
