Discover more about The Gamble House

The Gamble House, also known as the David B. Gamble House, stands as an iconic representation of the American Arts and Crafts movement. Built in 1908-1909 by the architectural firm Greene and Greene for David B. Gamble, of the Procter & Gamble Company, and his wife Mary, the house served as their winter residence, a warm escape from Cincinnati's harsh climate. The house is celebrated for its meticulous craftsmanship and seamless integration with its natural surroundings. Charles and Henry Greene masterfully incorporated elements of the Arts and Crafts movement with Japanese design aesthetics, emphasizing natural materials and a focus on functionality and comfort. The building features a unique system of interlocking timbers and mortise and tenon joints, all handcrafted by skilled artisans. The interior boasts intricate details, custom-designed furnishings, elaborate carpets, and a stunning Tiffany glass door, showcasing the architects' attention to detail. In 1966, the Gamble family gifted the house to the city of Pasadena in a joint agreement with the University of Southern California (USC) School of Architecture. Today, the Gamble House is a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark that is open to the public for tours and events. It also serves as a residence for two lucky 5th-year USC architecture students every year. Visitors can explore the house's history and architecture through docent-led tours, admiring the rare woods, handcrafted details, and unique furnishings designed by the Greenes.
