Discover more about Bedwell Bayfront Park

Bedwell Bayfront Park, a 160-acre expanse in Menlo Park, stands as a testament to ecological recovery and community dedication. Once a landfill serving the area from the late 1950s to 1984, it has been transformed into a thriving park, offering passive recreational activities and stunning views of the San Francisco Bay. Named after former Menlo Park City Manager Michael A. Bedwell, who championed its transformation, the park is now a haven for hikers, runners, cyclists, bird watchers, and nature enthusiasts. The park features an extensive trail system, including a 2.3-mile perimeter trail that forms part of the San Francisco Bay Trail, connecting all nine Bay Area counties. The interior trails wind through grassy hills, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the South Bay. These trails provide opportunities for bird watching, with over 160 species sighted throughout the year. Notably, Bedwell Bayfront Park is home to the Great Spirit Path, a unique art installation featuring 53 rock sculptures inspired by Native American pictographs. This 3/4-mile trail showcases a stone poem, adding a cultural and artistic dimension to the park's natural beauty. The park's transformation also includes infrastructure to capture methane gas generated by the former landfill, converting it into electricity and preventing groundwater contamination. Despite past threats of development, the park has remained a protected open space thanks to the efforts of local residents and organizations like the Friends of Bedwell Bayfront Park. Today, it stands as a vibrant example of turning "trash" into "treasure," offering a space for recreation, education, and appreciation of the natural environment.
