Discover more about Martin Luther King Park

Martin Luther King Park, located in East Palo Alto, serves as a vital recreational space for the local community. The park offers a variety of amenities, including baseball and multi-purpose fields, a play structure for children, and picnic areas equipped with BBQ pits. These facilities support a range of activities, from sports and games to family gatherings and outdoor cooking. In addition to its recreational facilities, Martin Luther King Park provides a significant access point to the Bay Trail and nearby nature preserves. This connection enhances its role in promoting outdoor activities and community engagement, allowing visitors to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding area. The park's location near the Baylands tidal marsh contributes to its unique environment, although it also results in lower tree canopy cover compared to parks in neighboring Palo Alto. The park is undergoing improvements and a comprehensive redesign to align with the city's Parks Master Plan. Planned enhancements include reconfiguring the existing fields to accommodate various sports such as baseball, soccer, football, and rugby. Additionally, a vacant lot adjacent to the park will be transformed to feature new basketball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, a bocce court, an inclusive play area, an adult fitness zone, shade structures, and additional parking. The renovation of the existing concessions and restroom building, along with improvements to BBQ and play areas, will further benefit the East Palo Alto community. Despite being an important community asset, the park has faced challenges, including periods of limited use and the need for greater investment. The city is actively working to revitalize the park and ensure it remains a safe, well-maintained, and engaging space for all residents.
