Discover more about Cogswell Plaza

Cogswell Plaza, located at 264 Lytton Avenue in Palo Alto, California, is a.5-acre park offering a serene retreat amidst the bustling city. Originally named City Hall Park when it opened in 1924, it featured grassy areas, a children's playground, and numerous trees and benches. In the early 1950s, proposals to convert the park into a parking lot or build a city hall annex were fortunately rejected. In 1955, the park was redesigned by San Francisco landscaper Douglas Baylis and renamed Elinor Cogswell Plaza, honoring Elinor Cogswell, the editor of the Palo Alto Times from 1938 to 1954. Cogswell passionately defended the park, advocating for its preservation as a green space. Today, the plaza features shaded benches and tables, landscaped flower beds, and a walking path, making it a quiet and inviting spot for visitors. Cogswell Plaza also holds historical significance as the location of Memorial Grove, dedicated in 2014 to honor three Palo Alto Police Department officers who died in the line of duty. The grove features three Coast Redwood trees, originally planted in 1955 near the city's first police station. The park is a popular location for events, including police memorial ceremonies and occasional concerts. While the park doesn't have a dedicated parking lot or restrooms, street parking is generally available nearby.
