Discover more about Teague Hill Open Space Preserve

Teague Hill Open Space Preserve is a 626-acre natural haven nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Woodside, California. Established in 1988, the preserve was created through the purchase of land from two corporations. While much of the preserve is inaccessible, it offers a vital link to the Bay Area Ridge Trail, a regional trail encircling the Bay Area. The accessible portion of Teague Hill features oak and madrone woodlands, showcasing the Bay Area's unique ecology. Lucky visitors might spot the rare Kings Mountain Manzanita, endemic to the mountain. The preserve's trails are open from a half-hour before sunrise until a half-hour after sunset, inviting exploration and connection with nature. Historically, the area was active in the lumber industry. In 1856, the first shingle mill in San Mateo County was established in Tripp Gulch, now part of the preserve. Operated by John G. Moore and later Dr. Tripp, the mill transported lumber via Old La Honda Road to Redwood City, contributing to Woodside's peak as a lumbering center around 1859-60. Today, Teague Hill provides a tranquil retreat, far removed from its industrial past.
