Discover more about Teague Hill Open Space Preserve

Teague Hill Open Space Preserve, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Woodside, California, spans 626 acres of natural beauty. Established in 1988, the preserve's acquisition was completed in two transactions, uniting land previously held by corporations with differing development visions. Named after Andrew Teague, a San Mateo County District Attorney elected in 1869, the area has a rich history tied to the local lumber industry. Though a large portion of Teague Hill remains inaccessible, the preserve plays a crucial role in regional trail access, thanks to the Bay Area Ridge Trail. This trail, the only public access point, connects hikers and equestrians to the wider network of open spaces, including Wunderlich Park and El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve. The landscape features a mix of Douglas-fir, oak, bay, and madrone forests, with steep ravines adding to the varied terrain. Visitors can explore oak and madrone woodlands and, if fortunate, spot the rare Kings Mountain Manzanita. The area's history is intertwined with logging, dating back to the mid-19th century when the Baker & Burnham Gang Mill operated nearby. Later, John G. Moore introduced the first shingle mill in San Mateo County in Tripp Gulch, now part of the preserve. Today, Teague Hill offers a tranquil escape, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
