Nestled in the heart of Old Sacramento, the What Cheer House stands as a testament to California's rich historical tapestry. Recognized as California Historical Landmark #597, this remarkable site offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the essence of the Gold Rush era. Built in 1853, the What Cheer House has had many lives, starting as a hotel called the Sackett Hotel. It was strategically located near the Sacramento waterfront and the Central Pacific Railroad station, catering to Gold Rush pioneers. The name is thought to come from the common greeting, “what cheer, partner?!”. In its early years, the What Cheer House also served as California State offices beginning in 1855. Later, it transitioned into a warehouse, supporting the maritime shipping industries. The building's location at Front and K Streets was central to Sacramento's commercial activity. Over time, the What Cheer House fell into disrepair but was renovated in the mid-1960s as part of a redevelopment plan to create the first historic district in the West. Today, it is part of a dense collection of historically valuable buildings in Old Sacramento. Currently, the What Cheer House is home to several shops, including Stage Nine Entertainment Store, G. Willikers Toy Emporium, The Vault, California Clothiers, and the Old Fashioned Candy and Confectionery. Visitors can explore the surrounding area, filled with other historical buildings, shops, and eateries, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the city's past.
