Discover more about Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, located in downtown Sacramento, is one of the city's most historically significant buildings. Completed in 1889, it serves as the mother church for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento. Bishop Patrick Manogue, inspired by European churches, secured land near the State Capitol to build a cathedral that would represent the importance of both church and state. The cathedral's architecture is a Victorian interpretation of French Renaissance style. Designed by Bryan J. Klinch, it was modeled after L'Eglise de la Sainte-Trinite in Paris. At the time of its completion, it was the largest cathedral west of the Mississippi River. The interior features a Cathedra (Bishop's chair), a spectacular dome, a 13-foot crucifix, a tabernacle tower, and a 100-year-old sanctuary lamp. The interior is adorned with stained glass windows, statues, and frescoes. The cathedral has undergone several renovations, including the reopening of the dome, which had been closed for acoustic reasons. Today, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is a vibrant parish serving the heart of Sacramento. It offers daily masses and various ministries. The cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of God's presence in the community.
