Discover more about California State Railroad Museum

The California State Railroad Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate, invites visitors to embark on a captivating journey through the history of railroads in California and the West. Located in Old Sacramento State Historic Park, the museum boasts over 225,000 square feet of exhibit space, showcasing 21 meticulously restored locomotives and railroad cars, some dating back to 1862. Step back in time as you explore exhibits that illustrate how railroads shaped people's lives, the economy, and the unique culture of the region. Marvel at the impressive "Sierra Scene," a large-scale model depicting the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad high in the Sierra Nevada around 1867, featuring the iconic Gov. Stanford locomotive. In addition to the main museum building, the complex includes a reconstructed Central Pacific Railroad Passenger Station, which sometimes opens for special events. From April through September, visitors can experience a 45-minute excursion train ride along the Sacramento River aboard the Sacramento Southern Railroad, pulled by a historic steam or diesel locomotive. The museum also operates Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown, offering further opportunities to explore California's railroad heritage. The museum's origins trace back to 1937 when a group of train enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area formed the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. Over the years, the organization donated 30 historic locomotives and cars to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, forming the foundation of the state-operated museum in Sacramento. The Central Pacific Railroad Passenger Station opened in 1976, followed by the main Railroad History Museum in 1981.
