Walking

From the Monterey Transit Plaza in downtown Monterey, El Estero Park is a 15-20 minute walk. Head east on Del Monte Avenue, then turn left onto Pearl Street. The park entrance will be on your left. This route is mostly flat and offers views of Monterey Bay. No costs are associated with walking.
Public Transport

In 1770, Miguel Costanso, a Spanish officer and engineer, created the first map of the lake. Today, it stands as a freshwater lake, a haven for migrating birds, and a focal point for recreational activities. The bird refuge at El Estero was named after Harry Ashland Greene in 1933.The park's most iconic feature is undoubtedly the Dennis the Menace Playground. Designed by Hank Ketcham, the creator of the beloved comic strip, the playground opened in 1956 and has been delighting children ever since. With its unique play structures, including a hedge maze, climbing wall, and giant adventure ship, the playground offers endless opportunities for imaginative play and adventure.
