Jacks Peak Park: Monterey Peninsula's Crowning Vista

Jacks Peak Park, rising 1,068 feet above Monterey and Carmel, is the highest point on the Monterey Peninsula. This 525-acre park protects one of the last three remaining natural stands of Monterey Pine forests in the United States. The park's history dates back to 1859 when David Jack, a Scottish immigrant, acquired the land. The park officially opened in January 1977 and has become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can explore approximately 8.5 miles of hiking trails that wind through cathedral-like forests and ascend to breathtaking ridgetop vistas. The Skyline Self-Guided Nature Trail is a highlight, featuring fossils from the Miocene epoch embedded in shale. Brochures are available at the entrance station to enhance the self-guided experience. Jacks Peak Park is also a haven for birdwatchers, as it lies within the Central Coast Birding Trail. The park's diverse flora includes madrone, coastal scrub, coyote brush, California sagebrush, and coast live oak. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot gray squirrels, white-tailed rabbits, and various bird species, with occasional sightings of golden eagles, brown bears, and even mountain lions.
