Discover more about Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead

The Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead offers a captivating look into San Diego's rural history. Established around 1870, the farmstead features one of the area's oldest adobe homes from the American era. The site has been meticulously restored to reflect its period of significance when occupied by the Sikes family. Zenas Sikes, one of the earliest ranchers to settle in California during the westward expansion, built the farmhouse. The Sikes family purchased 2,400 acres of the former Rancho San Bernardo in 1868 and moved onto the property by 1872. Initially, they built a one-room adobe structure, adding more rooms in the Greek revival style. The farmhouse reached its final outer dimensions by 1881. The Sikes family farmed winter wheat, which became a profitable crop in California. After Zenas Sikes' death in 1881, Eliza Sikes continued the farming business and later transitioned to a dairy operation. Today, visitors can explore the restored farmhouse, beautiful native California plant gardens, and a reconstructed creamery. The farmstead also serves as a trailhead for the Coast to Crest Trail. It provides an immersive experience of life on the original ranch. The site hosts events, including a farmers market and native plant sales.
