Discover more about Junípero Serra Museum

Perched atop Presidio Hill, the Junípero Serra Museum stands as a major symbol of San Diego and a reminder of California's beginnings. The museum, built in 1929, isn't the original mission, but rather a structure designed by William Templeton Johnson to resemble the early Spanish missions. It was founded by George Marston to honor San Diego's Spanish and Christian heritage. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits detailing the history of the San Diego Presidio and Mission, the first permanent European settlement in California, founded in 1769 by Father Junípero Serra and Gaspar de Portolá. The museum houses artifacts from archaeological digs at the site, offering insights into the lives of the Kumeyaay people, Spanish explorers, and Mexican settlers. From the museum's vantage point, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding area. The museum also provides historical context, highlighting Father Serra's vision for a chain of missions and the challenges faced by early settlers. Though the original mission was moved due to conflicts and accessibility, the Serra Museum remains a powerful symbol of San Diego's rich and complex past.
