Discover more about Museum of Us

The Museum of Us, situated in the landmark California Building within San Diego's Balboa Park, offers a fascinating exploration of the human experience. Originally founded as the San Diego Museum as part of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, the museum has evolved from its early focus on ethnographic collections to a modern institution committed to inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding. The museum's exhibits cover a broad spectrum of topics, including the ancient Maya, the history of beer, and the complex relationships between humans and animals. The 'Kumeyaay: Native Californians' exhibit pays tribute to the indigenous people of the San Diego area. 'Cannibals: Myth & Reality' dispels myths surrounding cannibalism, while 'Race: Are We So Different?' examines the concept of race and its impact on society. Visitors can also explore ancient Egyptian culture and climb the California Tower for 360-degree views of San Diego. The California Building itself is an architectural marvel, blending Spanish Colonial Revival styles and is designed by Bertram Goodhue. Its iconic California Tower, which reopened to the public in 2015 after being closed for nearly 80 years, is a key landmark in San Diego. The museum sits on the unceded territory and ancestral homeland of the Kumeyaay Nation, and the museum acknowledges this history.
