Discover more about Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens

The Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens in Encinitas provide a serene sanctuary overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1937 by Paramahansa Yogananda, the gardens are part of the Self-Realization Fellowship, an international religious organization that promotes the teachings of Kriya Yoga. Yogananda himself planted many of the trees and shrubs in this quiet refuge. The gardens feature meticulously landscaped paths that wind through vibrant flora, leading to secluded nooks perfect for contemplation. Visitors can explore a variety of flowering plants, tropical trees, succulents, and cacti. Koi ponds with colorful fish add to the tranquil ambiance, while the gentle murmur of waterfalls complements the panoramic ocean vistas. Benches are located throughout the gardens, inviting visitors to sit and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The site was once home to the Golden Lotus Temple, built in 1938 by Paramahansa Yogananda. However, the temple was removed in 1942 due to cliff instability. A plaque now marks its location. In 1948, the Golden Lotus Tower was erected nearby, adorned with golden, lotus-shaped ornaments reminiscent of the original temple. The Meditation Gardens are easy to find, located adjacent to the Self-Realization Fellowship Hermitage and Retreat. The gardens are open to the public and offer a unique inspirational setting for prayer, study, meditation, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature.
