Discover more about Timken Museum of Art

The Timken Museum of Art, often called San Diego's 'jewel box' of fine art, offers an intimate and enriching cultural experience in Balboa Park. Founded in 1965, the museum's creation was a collaborative effort between the Timken family of Canton, Ohio, and the Putnam sisters, Anne and Amy, who were early 20th-century art enthusiasts. The Putnam sisters, having amassed a significant collection of European paintings, established the Putnam Foundation to manage and showcase their art. Later, with funding from the Timken family, the Timken Museum of Art was built to house the Putnam Collection. The museum's architecture, a mid-century modern design by Frank L. Hope and Associates, features travertine, bronze, and glass, creating a serene space bathed in natural light. The Timken's collection spans 700 years of history, from 14th-century altarpieces to 19th-century still lifes. It includes works by European old masters, 19th-century American art, and Russian icons. Visitors can admire paintings by Veronese, Guercino, Petrus Christus, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jacques-Louis David, and John Singleton Copley. The museum also holds the only Rembrandt painting on public display in Southern California. Since its founding, the Timken has been committed to preserving and conserving its artworks. The museum offers a range of programs for students, senior citizens, and educators to enhance their appreciation and knowledge of art history.
