Lyon Street Steps: A Stairway to San Francisco Scenery

Ascend the Lyon Street Steps in Pacific Heights for breathtaking San Francisco views, stunning architecture, and a touch of local charm.

4.7

The Lyon Street Steps, located on the edge of Pacific Heights and bordering the Presidio, are a steep public staircase offering some of the city's best views. Built in 1916 by architect Louis M. Upton, who also designed many of the neighborhood's mansions, the steps were created to connect the residential areas above and below the hill. As you ascend the 332 steps, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, the Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz Island, and the Marin County hills. The steps are divided into two sections: the lower portion, which is steeper and narrower, and the upper portion, which is wider and more landscaped. Along the way, you'll find meticulously designed gardens, vibrant flowers, and the "Migrant Heart" sculpture, part of the Hearts in San Francisco project. The Lyon Street Steps are not only a scenic attraction but also a popular spot for fitness enthusiasts. Locals and visitors alike come here for a challenging workout, taking advantage of the steep incline for cardio and strength training. The steps have become a cultural landmark, hosting community events, fitness activities, and social gatherings. At the top of the steps, you'll find yourself on Billionaires' Row, a stretch of Broadway Street known for its grand mansions and stunning architecture. Take a moment to catch your breath and admire the impressive homes and immaculately manicured gardens that line the street. The Lyon Street Steps offer a unique glimpse into the lives of San Francisco's elite, as well as a chance to experience the natural beauty of the city.
