Discover more about The Panhandle

The Panhandle, a ¾-mile-long and one-block-wide park in San Francisco, serves as the eastern extension of Golden Gate Park. Stretching from Stanyan Street to Baker Street, it's bordered by Fell and Oak Streets, acting as a boundary between the Western Addition and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods. Originally conceived in 1870 as a test site for trees and shrubs for the larger Golden Gate Park, the Panhandle boasts some of the oldest trees in the area. Park engineers transformed the area from windswept sand dunes into a verdant landscape, planting various tree species from around the world. Today, it features Monterey Pines, Cypresses, and Eucalyptus, alongside other varietals. The Panhandle offers paved walking and biking paths, basketball courts, a playground, and exercise equipment. The William McKinley Memorial, dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904, stands at the park's eastern end. The park provides a serene environment for leisurely strolls, picnics, and outdoor activities, hosting community events and concerts throughout the year.
