Discover more about Berkeley Rose Garden

Nestled in the Berkeley Hills, the Berkeley Rose Garden is a tranquil escape boasting panoramic views and a vibrant display of roses. Established in 1937 as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project during the Great Depression, the garden provided employment while creating a lasting landmark. The garden occupies a canyon originally named El Valle de Los Codornices (Valley of the Quails). The garden's design, conceived by landscape architect Vernon M. Dean, features a terraced amphitheater that maximizes views of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the surrounding cityscape. A 220-foot-long redwood pergola, suggested by architect Bernard Maybeck, adds a rustic charm and provides shaded seating. Over 100 varieties of roses, totaling around 1,500 bushes, are arranged along the terraces, creating a stunning display of color and fragrance. The roses typically bloom most spectacularly in mid-May. Beyond the roses, the garden offers other attractions. Codornices Creek bisects the park, adding a natural element. On the north side, visitors can find tennis courts, while the south side features a grove of redwoods, bay laurel, and coastal live oak trees. A pedestrian tunnel connects the Rose Garden to Codornices Park across Euclid Avenue, offering access to picnic areas, play equipment, and a long concrete slide. The garden is open to the public from 6 AM to 10 PM daily and admission is free. It's a popular spot for weddings and events, with reservations required.
