Discover more about Eden Landing Ecological Reserve

Eden Landing Ecological Reserve offers a unique opportunity to witness the restoration of former industrial salt ponds into a vibrant wetland ecosystem. This 6,400-acre reserve, located on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay, is a critical habitat for a diverse array of resident and migratory waterbirds. Originally part of a vast tidal salt marsh system, the area was used for solar salt production by the Cargill Salt Company until the late 20th century. In 1996, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife began acquiring the land, initiating a restoration project to return the area to its natural state. The reserve now features a mix of restored salt ponds, diked marshes, and transitional upland areas. Visitors can explore several miles of trails, including a 3-mile portion of the San Francisco Bay Trail, offering stunning views of the wetlands and the bay. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of species, including mallards, Northern shovelers, egrets, herons, and the occasional glimpse of the endangered Ridgway's rail and salt marsh harvest mouse. A seasonal loop trail, open from October through February, provides access to managed ponds and the Mount Eden Creek marsh. The Oliver Salt Works, a historic salt production area, features a boardwalk and interpretive exhibits. Eden Landing is not just a place for recreation; it's also a living laboratory where biologists study the ideal conditions for re-establishing native species. The reserve plays a crucial role in the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project, the largest wetlands project in California.
