Discover more about Escondido Canyon Park

Escondido Canyon Park, a natural area in Malibu, California, is a popular destination for hikers, bikers, and equestrians seeking outdoor adventures. The park's main attraction is Escondido Falls, a 150-foot, multi-tiered waterfall that is the tallest in the Santa Monica Mountains. The falls are most impressive after winter and spring rains, though they can be minimal or nonexistent during drier periods. The Edward Albert Escondido Canyon Trail, the park's primary path, stretches 4.2 miles through diverse terrain, including oak woodland, riparian woodland, and coastal sage scrub. The trail crosses Escondido Creek several times, so be prepared for potentially wet feet. The hike to the lower falls is considered easy to moderate and is manageable for most skill levels. However, the upper falls are currently inaccessible to the public due to safety concerns and habitat preservation. Beyond hiking, Escondido Canyon Park offers opportunities for picnicking, bird watching, and wildlife viewing. The park is home to various bird species and small animals, providing ample opportunities for nature photography and observation. Remember that Escondido Canyon is a high fire risk zone, so smoking and open fires are prohibited.
