Monastery Beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach, is a scenic beach near Carmel-by-the-Sea named after the nearby Carmelite Monastery Mission. While beautiful, it's nicknamed "Mortuary Beach" due to hazardous conditions for swimmers. It is best known as a popular spot for experienced scuba divers.

Driving
From Carmel-by-the-Sea, head south on Highway 1. Monastery Beach is approximately a 5-minute drive. Look for parking along the shoulder of the highway near the beach entrance. Parking is free but limited, especially on weekends; arrive early. Be cautious when crossing the highway.
Public Transport
Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) Route 22 operates along Highway 1. Check the MST website or app for the most up-to-date schedule and stop locations. From the nearest bus stop, walk a short distance to the beach entrance. A single ride fare is typically around $2-3.
Walking
If you are in Carmel-by-the-Sea, you can walk south along Scenic Road, which eventually connects to Highway 1. Follow Highway 1 south for approximately 1.5 miles to reach Monastery Beach. Use caution as there is no dedicated pedestrian path along the highway. The walk should take approximately 30-40 minutes.
