Discover more about Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle, perched high on "La Cuesta Encantada" (The Enchanted Hill) overlooking the Pacific Ocean in San Simeon, California, stands as a testament to the extravagant vision of William Randolph Hearst and the architectural genius of Julia Morgan. Their collaboration, spanning nearly three decades from 1919 to 1947, transformed a humble hilltop campsite into a world-renowned estate, a sprawling complex of opulent buildings, lush gardens, and dazzling pools that epitomized the lavish lifestyle of the Roaring Twenties and beyond. George Hearst, William Randolph's father, initially purchased the 40,000-acre ranch in 1865. William Randolph inherited the land from his mother, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, in 1919, along with a substantial fortune that fueled his ambition to create a palatial retreat. Hearst envisioned a Mediterranean Revival masterpiece, drawing inspiration from European architecture and art, and entrusted the project to Julia Morgan, a pioneering architect who became the first woman to be a licensed architect in California. The centerpiece of Hearst Castle is Casa Grande, the main house, a sprawling structure boasting 115 rooms, including 38 bedrooms and over 40 bathrooms. Its design evokes a Spanish cathedral, complete with soaring bell towers and intricate ornamentation. Inside, Casa Grande is a treasure trove of art and antiques, reflecting Hearst's insatiable passion for collecting. Visitors can marvel at ancient Roman sculptures, Renaissance tapestries, and priceless artifacts from around the world. Beyond Casa Grande, the estate features three guesthouses, each designed in an Italianate style and lavishly furnished to accommodate Hearst's esteemed guests. These guesthouses, known as Casa del Mar, Casa del Monte, and Casa del Sol, offer a glimpse into the luxurious accommodations enjoyed by Hollywood stars, political figures, and other influential personalities who frequented Hearst Castle. The grounds of Hearst Castle are as impressive as the buildings themselves. Meticulously manicured gardens cascade down the hillside, adorned with fountains, statues, and vibrant floral displays. The Neptune Pool, an iconic landmark of the estate, is a Roman-style swimming pool surrounded by classical sculptures and offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The Roman Pool, located indoors, is equally stunning, with its intricate mosaic tiles and elaborate design. During Hearst's lifetime, Hearst Castle was a hub of social activity, hosting lavish parties and gatherings that attracted the elite of Hollywood and beyond. Guests included President Calvin Coolidge, Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, and numerous other luminaries from the worlds of entertainment, politics, and business. The estate provided a playground for the rich and famous, where they could indulge in swimming, tennis, horseback riding, and other recreational activities. After Hearst's death in 1951, the Hearst Corporation donated the estate to the State of California in 1958. Hearst Castle opened to the public as a museum, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur and opulence of this extraordinary estate. Today, Hearst Castle is a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Visitors can explore Hearst Castle through a variety of guided tours, each offering a unique perspective on the estate's history, architecture, and art collection. The Grand Rooms Tour provides an overview of the main house's social spaces, while the Upstairs Suites Tour delves into the private quarters of Hearst and his guests. The Cottages & Kitchen Tour explores the guesthouses and the estate's state-of-the-art kitchen. Additionally, seasonal and specialty tours are offered throughout the year, providing even more in-depth experiences. A visit to Hearst Castle begins at the Visitor Center, located at the foot of the Enchanted Hill. Here, visitors can purchase tickets, view exhibits about Hearst and Morgan, and watch the film "Hearst Castle: Building the Dream" in the Hearst Castle Theater. From the Visitor Center, buses transport visitors up the winding road to the castle, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Hearst Castle stands as a remarkable achievement of architecture, art, and engineering, a testament to the vision and ambition of William Randolph Hearst and the talent and skill of Julia Morgan. It offers a unique glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of a bygone era, a world of lavish parties, priceless art, and breathtaking beauty.
