Overview
The Forestiere Underground Gardens, located in Fresno, California, are a testament to one man's vision and hard work. Baldassare Forestiere, a Sicilian immigrant, began carving this subterranean complex in 1906, continuing until his death in 1946. Frustrated by the hardpan soil unsuitable for citrus farming and the region's scorching summers, Forestiere created his own cool, underground retreat.Using only hand tools like shovels and picks, Forestiere excavated over 10 acres, reaching depths of up to 25 feet. His creation includes a network of interconnected rooms, passageways, and courtyards, reminiscent of ancient Roman catacombs. The gardens feature unique fruit-producing trees, shrubs, and vines, some over 90 years old, thriving in the underground microclimate. Skylights provide natural light and ventilation, while the earth's insulation keeps the temperature comfortable year-round.Visitors can explore Forestiere's former living quarters, including a summer and winter bedroom, a kitchen, and even a fishpond. The gardens also showcase his architectural ingenuity, with arches, vaults, and stone-built walls constructed from the excavated hardpan. The Forestiere Underground Gardens offer a unique blend of history, architecture, and horticulture, providing a fascinating glimpse into the life and vision of its creator.
