Today, it stands as a testament to the spirit of early settlers.The town's story began in 1849 when the Murphy brothers discovered gold, initially naming it 'Murphy's Diggings'. Revitalized in 1852, the area transformed into a center of commerce. One of Vallecito's iconic symbols is the Vallecito Bell, cast in 1853 in Troy, New York, and transported around Cape Horn. Residents purchased the bell and hung it in a large oak tree to summon the community for announcements and celebrations. Though a windstorm felled the tree in 1939, the bell remains a cherished artifact.As you wander through Vallecito, you can still feel the echoes of the Gold Rush. The town's historic buildings offer glimpses into the lives of those who once called Vallecito home. The landmark also features walking trails through the surrounding landscape, providing views and a peaceful retreat.
