Phnom Baset Travel Guide

Phnom Baset, situated northwest of Phnom Penh, presents a serene escape with historical significance. The mountain, also known as Prasat Phnom Baset, is home to an ancient temple that scholars believe was constructed around the middle of the 8th century. While little remains of the original sculptures and bas-reliefs, the temple still offers a connection to the region's rich cultural heritage.Visitors can explore the rectangular brick edifice that houses a rounded granite rock with a natural grotto. A highlight is the enormous, granite-carved reclining Buddha, measuring 21 meters in length. Recent constructions of Neak Ta shrines have added to the site, although they have also caused some damage to the ancient temple.Beyond the temple, Phnom Baset provides an opportunity to immerse oneself in nature. The north side of the hill features picnic huts and trails suitable for nature walks. Reaching the summit rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding plains, lakes, rivers, and rice fields. The south side of Phnom Baset features a Chinese shrine, a popular place for prayer and sunset viewing.
