Discover more about Koh Ker Temple

Nestled within the remote jungles of northern Cambodia, Koh Ker stands as a remarkable testament to the Khmer Empire's grandeur. Serving as the capital from 928 to 944 AD under King Jayavarman IV, it boasts unique architecture and a serene atmosphere distinct from the more crowded Angkor Wat. The site features over 30 temples and structures, with the Prasat Thom pyramid as its centerpiece, rising 36 meters above the surrounding landscape. King Jayavarman IV initiated an ambitious construction program, building numerous temples and a massive water reservoir during his reign. The Koh Ker style of art and sculpture reached its peak during this period. The monuments at Koh Ker were dedicated to Hindu gods, primarily Shiva. After the capital shifted back to Angkor, Koh Ker was abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle, remaining largely forgotten until the 20th century. Visitors can explore various temples, including Prasat Krahom, known for its red brick construction and intricate carvings. Climbing Prasat Thom offers panoramic views of the jungle. The site provides a sense of adventure and discovery for those seeking to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations.
