Su Muon Pagoda: A Spiritual Sanctuary in Phu Quoc
Discover tranquility at Su Muon Pagoda in Phu Quoc, a historic Buddhist temple offering serene gardens and spiritual solace away from the island's bustle.
Su Muon Pagoda, or Hung Long Tu, is a significant spiritual site on Phu Quoc Island, offering a tranquil retreat from the bustling tourist areas. Founded in the early 1930s by Monk Nguyen Kim Muon (also known as Gia Minh), it began as a humble structure of leaves and wood. The pagoda's history is intertwined with the island's cultural evolution, having been almost entirely destroyed during the war in 1945. It was rebuilt in 1955 by Monk Minh Uc, who preserved the name Su Muon to honor its founder. A major restoration in the 1980s further solidified its place as a spiritual landmark. Located approximately 5 kilometers west of Duong Dong Town in Duong To Commune, the pagoda is easily accessible. The journey to the main hall involves ascending 60 stone steps, a symbolic climb representing the cycle of life. Lush greenery surrounds the pagoda, creating a serene atmosphere for reflection. Visitors are greeted by traditional Vietnamese Buddhist architecture upon reaching the main hall. The hall is built on a 3-meter-high stone foundation and adorned with statues of Buddha and various Bodhisattvas. Two dragon figures and a moon figure, crafted from fine porcelain, grace the roof. In front of the hall stands a statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, seated on a lotus, flanked by stone formations resembling dragons and tigers. Behind the main hall, visitors can discover the ancient Konia tree, estimated to be over 200 years old. At its base sits a statue of Gautama Buddha. Su Muon Pagoda is not only a place of worship but also a center for cultural and religious activities. Throughout the year, the pagoda hosts various Buddhist ceremonies and festivals. Visitors come to pray for well-being, career success, and prosperity, immersing themselves in the sacred ambiance.
