Phnom Srei: The Women's Hill

Phnom Srei, translating to "Women's Hill", is a captivating landmark in Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia. Located in Kampong Siem District, it stands alongside Phnom Pros (Man's Hill), both deeply rooted in Cambodian folklore. The mountain's name originates from a legend about a competition between men and women to determine who would have the right to propose marriage. The women, through clever trickery, tricked the men into thinking the sun had risen, thus winning the competition and establishing the tradition of men asking for a woman's hand in marriage. To reach the summit, visitors climb 308 steps. Along the way and at the summit, discover ancient temples adorned with vintage paintings depicting scenes from Khmer history. Though less restored than those at Phnom Pros, they offer a rustic charm. Nuns often maintain the temple, welcoming donations for ongoing restoration. Phnom Srei also bears witness to Cambodia's tumultuous history. During the Khmer Rouge regime, it served as a site of detention and torture, a grim reminder of the country's dark past. Despite this, Phnom Srei stands as a symbol of resilience and the enduring spirit of the Cambodian people. The views from the top encompass the surrounding countryside and offer a tranquil experience, especially at sunrise and sunset.
