Discover more about Moonlight Pavilion ( Preah Tineang Chanchaya )

The Moonlight Pavilion (Preah Tineang Chan Chhaya), located within the Royal Palace complex in Phnom Penh, is an open-air pavilion with a rich history and cultural significance. Constructed in 1913-14 under King Sisowath, it replaced an earlier wooden structure built during King Norodom's reign. The pavilion's balcony has been used as a platform for the royal family to view parades and processions along Sothearos Boulevard. Historically, the Moonlight Pavilion has been a venue for classical Khmer dance performances, royal addresses, and state banquets. Most recently, it was used for a banquet during the 2004 coronation of King Norodom Sihamoni. Its elegant design and prominent location along the palace's eastern wall make it a recognizable landmark in Phnom Penh. The Royal Palace itself was established in 1866 when King Norodom moved the capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh. The palace complex features nine buildings, each with unique architectural charm and historical importance. While some areas, like the King's residence (Khemarin Palace), are off-limits to the public, the Throne Hall, Silver Pagoda, and Moonlight Pavilion are open for visitors to explore. The Royal Palace blends ancient Khmer and 19th-century French architectural styles.
