Discover more about Ta Prohm Temple

Ta Prohm, originally known as Rajavihara, was built in 1186 A.D. by King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and dedicated to his mother. The temple once housed almost 80,000 people, including priests, officials, and dancers, illustrating the Khmer Empire's extensive resources and organizational capabilities. Unlike many other temples in the Angkor complex that have been largely restored, Ta Prohm has been left in a state of captivating disrepair, with the jungle intertwining with the temple. Giant trees, including silk-cotton and strangler fig trees, grow out of the stone structures, their roots snaking across the walls and through the courtyards. This unique environment creates a mystical and secretive atmosphere. The temple complex covers 39 hectares and is characterized by a series of concentric rectangular galleries. Visitors can explore narrow corridors, partially collapsed halls, and courtyards scattered with stone blocks. The Hall of Dancers features reliefs of dancers, and while it has been undergoing restoration, its pediments are some of the best in the complex. Ta Prohm is located approximately one kilometer east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray. The temple's distinctive appearance led to its featuring in the film 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,' increasing its popularity. Today, Ta Prohm attracts visitors who are drawn to its unique blend of ancient architecture and the power of nature.
