Pre Rup: Mountain Temple of Transformation

Pre Rup, meaning "turning the body", is a majestic mountain temple constructed in 961 or early 962 AD during the reign of King Rajendravarman II. Located south of the East Baray, it was likely the state temple of the Khmer empire and is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The temple's name is believed to be linked to ancient cremation rituals, where the body was turned in different directions. Some scholars propose that Pre Rup may have been intended as the centerpiece of a new capital city, though archaeological evidence remains inconclusive.Built with a combination of laterite, brick, and sandstone, Pre Rup features a three-tiered pyramid design, reminiscent of Mount Meru, the sacred mountain in Hindu cosmology. The temple complex has two perimeter walls, with the inner enclosure featuring the pyramidal structure. The pyramid rises 12 meters in three tiers, leading to a platform at the summit. Here, five towers are arranged in a quincunx, a distinctive feature representing the five peaks of Mount Meru.Guardian lion statues surround the staircases, symbolizing protection and power.
