Discover more about Terrace of the Elephants

The Terrace of the Elephants, a remarkable structure within the ancient city of Angkor Thom, served as a grandstand for King Jayavarman VII and his court. Constructed in the late 12th century, this 350-meter-long terrace provided a vantage point for observing military processions, public ceremonies, and games. The terrace is celebrated for its detailed carvings of elephants, which highlight the animal's importance in Khmer culture as symbols of strength and power. The structure is divided into sections featuring bas-reliefs of garudas, lions, and mythological scenes. The most iconic carvings are the three elephant heads holding lotus bouquets in their trunks. Originally, the terrace was part of a larger complex that included a wooden pavilion and the royal palace. Envoys described the pavilion as being decorated with gold-framed mirrors. Today, only the ornate stone foundations remain, offering visitors a chance to imagine the pageantry and royal power that once unfolded here. Walking along the terrace provides a panoramic view of the Royal Square of Angkor Thom.
