Discover more about Prasat Lolei (Lolei Temple)

Prasat Lolei, constructed in 893 AD by King Yasovarman I, stands as a testament to the early Khmer empire and its devotion to Hinduism. Dedicated to Shiva and the royal family, this temple was the last of the Hariharalaya temples, predating the grand Angkor Wat. The name 'Lolei' is believed to be derived from 'Hariharalaya,' the ancient capital city where it resides. Originally, Prasat Lolei was built on an island in the center of the Indratataka baray, a vast reservoir symbolizing the mythical Mount Meru, home of the Hindu gods. Although the reservoir is now dry, the temple's island setting once added to its spiritual significance. Today, the temple complex features four brick sanctuary towers adorned with sandstone carvings, lintels, and inscriptions. These towers, though undergoing restoration, display the exquisite craftsmanship of the Khmer builders. Visitors can explore the temple's detailed carvings, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and honoring King Yasovarman I's ancestors. The peaceful atmosphere provides a unique opportunity for reflection and a more intimate connection with Cambodia's rich heritage, away from the crowds of more popular temples. A modern Cambodian Buddhist temple has been built on the same site.
