Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Old Market area, walk north along the Siem Reap River. The Royal Residence and gardens are approximately a 15-minute walk. Follow the riverbank, passing ornate stone street lamps and sculptures. The gardens will be on your left, and the Royal Residence is across Road 6. There are no entrance fees for the gardens.

  • Tuk-tuk

    Tuk-tuks are readily available throughout Siem Reap. A short trip from the city center or Pub Street to the Royal Residence and gardens typically costs between US$3 and US$5. Negotiate the fare with the driver before starting your journey. The journey takes approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic.

The Royal Residence in Siem Reap provides a tranquil escape in the heart of the city. Serving as the official residence for the King of Cambodia during visits, it holds historical significance as the site where King Sihanouk and General Lon Nol planned Cambodia's independence from France in the 1950s. Although the residence is not open for interior tours, its elegant architecture, a blend of traditional Khmer and modern design, can be admired from the outside. The adjacent Royal Independence Gardens offer a serene public space with manicured lawns, vibrant flora, and ancient trees. Visitors can stroll along the Siem Reap River, relax in the shade, and observe locals engaging in daily activities. The gardens also feature the Preah Ang Chek Preah Ang Chorm Shrine, a revered religious site where locals pray and receive blessings from monks. The gardens are a focal point for celebrations, especially during the Water Festival and Khmer New Year. In late 2022, twelve copper statues commemorating military leaders from the Khmer Empire era were unveiled outside the residence. The Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor, a colonial-style hotel built during the French occupation, stands opposite the Royal Residence and gardens.
