Discover more about Phnom Da Temple

Phnom Da Temple, located in the Takeo province of Cambodia, is an ancient archaeological site that offers a window into the Kingdom of Funan. The temple, built on a hill (Phnom Da means Da Hill), was initially constructed in the 6th century during the reign of King Rutravarman and later rebuilt in the 11th century. The temple is made of laterite, brick, and sandstone. Visitors can explore the main temple, Prasat Phnom Da, and a smaller sanctuary, Asrom Moha Eysei, located about 300 meters southwest. The main temple houses a Linga and a Yoni, symbols of Shiva and his consort. Five man-made caves near the temple once housed sacred objects and were, tragically, used as cremation sites during the Khmer Rouge regime. Climbing the staircase to the temple is rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, especially the vast rice plains that flood during the rainy season. Phnom Da is more than just an archaeological site; it's a place where visitors can connect with Cambodia's rich cultural heritage and appreciate the beauty of its landscape.
