Tamao Mountain, also known as Phnom Tamao, is a captivating destination that combines natural beauty, historical significance, and wildlife conservation. Situated approximately 40 kilometers south of Phnom Penh in the Takeo Province, this varied site encompasses a diverse landscape of five mountains – Phnom Tamao, Phnom Thma Dos, Phnom Pdaov Pun, Phnom Chhoy, and Phnom Bang. The entire site spans 2,500 hectares, with a significant portion dedicated to protected forest, making it a haven for both flora and fauna. At the heart of Tamao Mountain lies the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center (PTWRC), the largest animal park in Cambodia. Established in 1995, the center provides a safe haven for over 1,200 rescued animals, representing more than 100 species. Many of these animals are endangered due to illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss. The PTWRC is managed through a collaboration between the Cambodian Forestry Administration and Wildlife Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation. The animals at the rescue center include a wide array of species, such as Asian elephants, tigers, lions, sun bears, gibbons, macaques, leopards, crocodiles, and numerous bird and reptile species. Beyond the wildlife center, Tamao Mountain boasts a rich cultural history, with ancient temples scattered across its slopes. The two primary temples are Tamao Temple (Phnom Tamao) and Thma Dos Temple (Phnom Thma Dos), both dating back to the 11th century. Tamao Temple, constructed during the reign of King Suryavarman I and Udayadityavarman II, served as a place of worship. Thma Dos Temple, situated northwest of Tamao Temple on Phnom Thma Dos, is another significant historical site. Built in the 11th century, this temple is also constructed from silt stone and red solid brick, showcasing the architectural style of the Khliang period.
