Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the city of Ngaoundéré, which is a common base for exploring Adamawa. Head northeast on the N1 road towards Garoua. After approximately 50 kilometers, look for signs directing you to the Mandara Mountains. You’ll need to take a right turn onto a smaller road (check local maps for the exact turnoff) that will lead you closer to the mountains. The journey may take about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on road conditions. Be cautious of the local wildlife and road conditions as they can vary.
Public Transportation
To reach the Mandara Mountains via public transportation, start at the Ngaoundéré bus station. Look for a bus or shared taxi heading towards Garoua. Inform the driver that you wish to get off at the turnoff for the Mandara Mountains. The fare is usually around 1,500 to 3,000 CFA francs (approximately $3 to $5) depending on the vehicle and time of year. Once you arrive at the turnoff, you may need to hire a motorcycle taxi (locally known as 'benskin') to reach the base of the mountains. The cost for this leg is generally around 1,000 to 2,000 CFA francs ($2 to $4).
Hiking
For those who are adventurous, after reaching the base of the Mandara Mountains, you can hike up to explore the area. Ensure you have a guide if you're not familiar with the terrain, as the paths can be challenging. It's advisable to bring water and snacks, as well as appropriate hiking gear. Local guides can be hired on-site, and their fees can vary but typically range from 5,000 to 10,000 CFA francs ($10 to $20) for a half-day guide.
