Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Buea, take a shared taxi (taxi-brousse) towards Limbe. Inform the driver you wish to stop at Mount Cameroon National Park. The fare is approximately 500-1000 CFA francs. From Douala, take a bus to Mile 17 for around $5. From Mile 17, proceed to the park.

  • Car

    From Buea, head southwest on the N3 highway towards Limbe. After about 12 km, exit towards Mount Cameroon National Park, following the signs to the entrance. Parking is available near the trailhead. Ensure you have enough fuel, as services are limited.

  • Walking

    If you are near the park entrance, walking is an option. From the center of Buea, head towards Molyko Road and follow the signs for Mount Cameroon. The walk takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.

Mount Cameroon National Park, established in 2009, encompasses 58,178 hectares of diverse landscapes surrounding Mount Cameroon, also known as Mount Fako. This active volcano, the highest peak in West and Central Africa, dominates the park, offering a dramatic backdrop to a region teeming with life. The park's altitude ranges from sea level to over 4,000 meters, creating a remarkable array of ecosystems. Lowland rainforests transition into sub-montane and montane forests, then into montane scrub and grasslands, and finally, sub-alpine grasslands near the summit. Visitors can explore numerous hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging ascents to the summit. The most popular trail is the Mount Cameroon via Guiness Track, a 21.2 km route gaining almost 3,012 meters in elevation. Hiking provides opportunities to witness the park's diverse plant life, including orchids, ferns, and medicinal plants. Wildlife includes forest elephants, chimpanzees, drills, and over 330 bird species, including the endemic Mount Cameroon francolin and Mount Cameroon speirops. The park also holds cultural significance for the local Bakweri people, who call the mountain Mongo ma Ndemi, meaning "Mountain of Greatness". Vestiges of the colonial era can also be found in the surrounding areas. The annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope attracts athletes worldwide, showcasing local culture and promoting tourism.
