Discover more about Prime Minister's Lodge

The Prime Minister's Lodge, also known as the “Von Puttkamer Schloss,” stands as a testament to Buea's rich political and colonial history. Constructed in 1902 by Jesko von Puttkamer, the governor of German Kamerun, the building was initially designed as a governor's palace, drawing inspiration from Kaiser Wilhelm Hunting Pavillon. The Germans even called it the Cloud Throne (Wolkenthron) and the Realm of mists (Nebelheim). Its architecture blends traditional Cameroonian elements with modern colonial influences, making it a unique and fascinating subject for visitors. From 1954 to 1961, it served as the residence of the Prime Minister of Southern Cameroon, and later, from 1961 to 1972, as the residence of the Prime Minister of Western Cameroon. After 1972, with the dissolution of the Cameroon federation, the lodge was abandoned and plundered. Although it was eventually converted into a presidential palace, the Schloss remained largely deserted and was not fully restored until 2014. While access to the interior may be restricted, the exterior and surrounding gardens are open to the public, providing a serene atmosphere for tourists. The lodge is conveniently located near other attractions in Buea, such as local markets and cultural sites, making it an ideal stop for those interested in exploring the region's history and culture. Buea itself, nestled at the foot of Mount Cameroon, offers a cool climate and lush scenery, adding to the allure of the Prime Minister's Lodge.
