Discover more about Margaretsville Lighthouse

The Margaretsville Lighthouse, located in the quaint village of Margaretsville, Nova Scotia, has been a guiding light on the Bay of Fundy since 1859. The lighthouse was erected when the residents of the thriving village decided a lighthouse was a necessity to navigation for vessels plying the water of the Bay of Fundy. This picturesque lighthouse is a testament to the area's rich maritime history and the resilience of its community. The lighthouse itself is a 9.7-meter (22-foot) square, tapered wooden tower, painted white with a distinctive broad black horizontal stripe – the only daymark of this color in Nova Scotia. The light, positioned 9 meters (30 feet) above the water, continues to serve fishing vessels and recreational boaters navigating the bay. Originally, the land grant had been made out to Sir Brenton's father, Dr. John Haliburton, surgeon from Rhode Island, for his service in His Majesty's Royal Navy. Visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy panoramic views of the Bay of Fundy, and learn about the lighthouse's history. The adjacent wharf and Art Shack gallery together with the community's distinctive black and white striped lighthouse add much to the community's charm. The nearby Boathouse Heritage Centre and Boardwalk offers visitors the opportunity to explore Margaretsville's shipbuilding and fishing legacy through artifacts and displays. The lighthouse is a cherished symbol of Margaretsville, attracting artists, tourists, and locals alike.
