The Skyline Trail is one of the most iconic and popular hikes in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia. This well-maintained trail offers stunning panoramic vistas of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the winding Cabot Trail below. The trail is known for its dramatic headland cliff, where visitors can enjoy an eagle's-eye view of the rugged coastline and potentially spot whales in the ocean. The Skyline Trail presents two route options: a 6.5 km (4 mi) out-and-back trail to the famous boardwalk viewpoint or an 8.2 km (5.1 mi) loop. The easy-to-moderate terrain makes it suitable for a wide range of hikers, including families with children. The path consists of mostly flat or gently rolling gravel paths and boardwalk sections, with minimal elevation gain. However, caution is advised near the cliffs, and staying on the boardwalk is essential to protect the fragile headland plants. Wildlife sightings are common, with opportunities to observe moose, bald eagles, and various boreal birds in their natural habitat. The trail is particularly popular during sunset, when the golden light casts a magical glow over the cliffs, ocean, and endless skies.
