Discover more about Fort Wellington National Historic Site

Fort Wellington National Historic Site, located in Prescott, Ontario, is one of Canada's best-preserved 19th-century fortifications. Built on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, the site stands as a testament to the strategic importance of the region during pivotal moments in Canadian history. The original Fort Wellington was constructed during the War of 1812 to protect a crucial transshipment point on the St. Lawrence River. Prescott's location at the head of the Gallop Rapids made it a key point for water traffic between Montreal and the Great Lakes. In February 1813, troops assembled here crossed the frozen river to capture Ogdensburg, NY. The fort was later abandoned in 1833 but rebuilt in 1838 in response to the Rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada. The current structure, dating from 1838, features a blockhouse and officers' quarters overlooking the river. Although never attacked directly, Fort Wellington served as an assembly point for British regulars and militia who defeated an invading force at Windmill Point in 1838. Throughout the 19th century, the fort was used as a militia base and played a role in later American raids and the Fenian Raids of 1866. Today, visitors can explore the historic grounds and buildings, including the barracks, powder magazine, and officers' quarters. Costumed interpreters bring the past to life, offering insights into the daily lives of soldiers and their families in 1846 when the Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment was stationed here. Special activities, such as rifle demonstrations and cannon firings, provide an immersive experience for all ages. The visitor center features exhibits and a rare 1812-era gunboat wreck.
