Discover more about Port Credit Lighthouse

The Port Credit Lighthouse is a captivating landmark that embodies the rich maritime history of Mississauga. Situated on the western bank of the Port Credit Harbour, at the mouth of the Credit River where it flows into Lake Ontario, the lighthouse offers visitors a picturesque scene and a glimpse into the past. The original lighthouse was built in 1863 by Fredrick Chase Capreol to attract business to the harbor. It was later replaced by a government-built lighthouse in 1882. This second lighthouse played a vital role in Port Credit's history until it was separated from the mainland by a flood in 1908 and eventually decommissioned in 1918. The abandoned wooden structure was destroyed by fire in 1936. In 1991, the Lions Club of Credit Valley constructed the current lighthouse as a replica of the 1882 structure. Today, the red and white lighthouse serves as a functional beacon, visible from 15 miles out on Lake Ontario, and a popular tourist attraction. It also houses the Port Credit Business Improvement Association and a Region of Peel pumping station. Visitors can climb to the upper deck for panoramic views of the Credit River, Lake Ontario, and the charming village of Port Credit. The lighthouse is surrounded by parks, shops, restaurants, and walking trails, making it a perfect destination for a leisurely afternoon.
