Nestled in the heart of Old Toronto, the Alexandra Gates represent a captivating piece of history and artistry. Constructed in 1901 by the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (later known as the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire, IODE), the gates originally stood at the intersection of Bloor Street and Avenue Road. They were built to commemorate the visit of Prince George, Duke of Cornwall, and Mary, Duchess of Cornwall.The gates are named after Queen Alexandra, the consort of King Edward VII. The letters 'E' and 'A' on each post stand for Edward and Alexandra, the reigning King and Queen at the time. Designed by Chadwick and Buckett, the gates featured stone pillars and wrought iron lamps with serpent-head designs. In 1960, due to the widening of Avenue Road, the gates were moved to their current location at the north end of Philosopher's Walk, just west of the Royal Ontario Museum. The wrought iron lamps were restored in 1990.Philosopher's Walk, a scenic footpath on the University of Toronto's St. George campus, provides a tranquil route through the heart of the university. The Alexandra Gates serve as a grand entry point to this path, inviting visitors to explore the surrounding lush greenery and historic buildings. A plaque on the gate commemorates the royal visit.
