Discover more about The Memorial Chamber

The Memorial Chamber, conceived by architect John A. Pearson, serves as a national shrine within the Peace Tower, dedicated to Canadians who sacrificed their lives in military service. Originally intended as a tribute to those who died in the First World War, it now honors all Canadian war dead. The Chamber's design incorporates stones from significant European battlefields, including Ypres, the Somme, Vimy, and Verdun, connecting visitors to the ground where these individuals fought. The walls feature niches containing marble slabs adorned with military crests and emblems. Stained glass windows and sculptures further enhance the Chamber's commemorative atmosphere. The focal point is the Altar of Remembrance, resting on steps made of stone from Flanders Fields. The Books of Remembrance, containing the names of over 118,000 Canadians who died in service, are displayed on the altar. Each day at 11:00 AM, a page is turned in each book during a solemn ceremony. The Memorial Chamber encourages reflection, peace, and respect.
