Discover more about Clock Tower

The Iquique Clock Tower, or 'Reloj de Iquique', is located in the heart of Iquique, Chile, in Plaza Arturo Prat. This iconic structure symbolizes the city's maritime history and architectural elegance. Erected in 1878, the tower's design is attributed to Eduardo de Lapeyrouse. The clock itself was purchased from jeweler Federico Franzt and shipped from England. The tower's eclectic style combines Gothic and Islamic architectural elements, showcasing pointed, aggregated, and lobed arches in a Mudejar style. Built from Oregon pine, the tower has three stepped sections, each with a square plan. The base features ogival arches that open like porches. Originally, the Clock Tower was built to replace the clock of the Mother Church, which had been destroyed by a fire in 1873. The tower has survived fires and earthquakes, witnessing Iquique's transformation from a Peruvian territory to a Chilean city. It was declared a National Historic Landmark on July 13, 1987. Today, the Clock Tower is surrounded by cafes, shops, and street vendors, offering visitors a taste of local culture.
