Inaugurated on January 1, 1890, during the saltpeter boom, the theater was designed by Italian architect Natale Rauty and constructed by the French firm Dubois y Cía. The building's European architectural style, featuring Oregon pinewood brought from the United States, reflects the opulence of the era.Over the years, the theater has been graced by performances from renowned artists such as Sara Bernhardt, Antonio Vico, and Fregoli. Its stage has been a platform for a diverse range of cultural activities, including operas, zarzuelas, theater plays, and community events. The theater's facade, adorned with four female figures symbolizing the seasons, and the intricate ornamentation of its boxes and stage frame, captivate visitors with their finesse and plastic richness.The theater has faced challenges, including fires that damaged its structure, but it has been rebuilt and restored to preserve its original splendor. A recent restoration project, completed in March 2025, included renovations to the building's three levels, restoration of artwork and statues, and improvements to acoustics, lighting, and accessibility. The theater now features 684 seats and a total capacity of 750 people.Today, the Municipal Theater of Iquique continues to be a vibrant cultural center, hosting a variety of performances and events.     The Municipal Theater is located on Thompson 269, directly in front of Plaza Arturo Prat, making it easily accessible on foot from most central Iquique locations. From the Cavancha area, walk north along Avenida Arturo Prat, then turn left onto Thompson Street. The theater will be on your left, facing the plaza. No costs are involved when walking.
